ZEHR: Gerald Lee “Jerry” of Zurich

December 30, 2021 By Haskett Funeral Homes 151 Condolences

ZEHR: Gerald Lee “Jerry” of Zurich

Jerry was a loving, caring and generous husband to his wife Ruth for 37 years. He often told her she was the best wife he ever had, and had the best sense of humour who could make her laugh out loud even the day before he left this earth. He was the master of quick witted one liners and could start a conversation with anyone and was the king of small talk.

Jerry was a loving father to Amanda and her husband David, Anneka and her husband Steve, and Samuel and his wife Danielle. He dearly loved his grandchildren, Edoras, Emmanuel, Renfri and Ezekiel. He was passionate about family and loved all our family vacations taken all together in Disney World, one of his favourite places, at cottages or camping and most recently in Hawaii. He loved every family gathering and talked about how wonderful it was that we were all together, for days later.
He was also passionate about his many hunting trips, including moose hunting in Cochran and more recently deer hunting with his hunting partners, Ryan, David, Colin and Steven. Nothing made him happier than to pass his hunting knowledge on to the next generation and he spoke of it often. He often told Ruth about all the things he was going to do when he got better and returning to hunting was high on his list.

Jerry also loved his real estate profession. Ruth would often ask him, if he could do anything what would that be? His first answer was always to own a hunting and fishing store, but the second would be to sell real estate . He could hardly wait to get better so he could sell real estate again. He loved his work and kept meticulous files on all the properties he sold over 35 years that he could have the information at the tip of his fingers if he were to list the same property often a decade later. If you ever needed a survey on a property, you could check with Jerry as he would have it in his files.

Jerry also loved his volunteer work but always wanted to keep it very low key. He never wanted to bring attention to himself but truly enjoyed driving for Blessings and his many church activities. Jerry was a boys club leader for decades and frequently ran into kids years later who came up to say hi. It was a position he truly enjoyed and planned events for weeks in advance. He was selfless and generous when it came to helping his family and friends. He never wanted the praise or accumulation for any of his gestures and every thing he did was very much behind the scenes.

It was a life lived for his wife and his family. It was a life that ended far too soon and the hole that it left will never be filled.

A funeral service will be held at Kingsfield – Zurich Mennonite Church, 37818 Zurich – Hensall Road, Zurich on Wednesday afternoon, at 2 PM with Dennis Estep and Ken Gazley officiating. Due to Provincial COVID-19 restrictions, each person must RSVP for the funeral service, please click “Register Now” below, to register.

For those unable to attend in person, the family invites you to join with them from the comfort of your home. Stream the service live or at your convenience by visiting www.facebook.com/haskettfh.

If desired, memorial contributions can be made either to a gofundme campaign (https://www.gofundme.com/f/transitioning-to-a-new-chapter) or the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.

Dear Ruth, Amanda, Anneka, Sam, Aunt Laurene, Dianne, Dwight ,Angela and Terry,
Our heartfelt condolences go to all of you! Jerry was a close cousin/nephew as kids. He spent many a summer day with our family on our farm, and while he was closer my brother Bob’s age, he always made time for myself and my sister Lisa and we all loved it when he came. I recall he was the most funny and entertaining of all the cousins. He also loved our pony Roxy- and she loved him right back. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you go about life without his earthly presence.

I was very saddened to hear of Jerry’s passing. He was a kind, calm soul. He was a easy person to talk to and get along with which suited perfectly with his career. I am so grateful for his help in buying and selling my home, my husband’s home and in finding our dream home together. Our thoughts are with his family during this very difficult time.

Aunt Laurene, cousins Diane, Dwight, Ange and Terry; Ruth and family:
My sincere condolences on the loss of a deeply loved son, brother, husband, father and grandfather! My heart breaks for all of you as you begin your journey down the road of loss, grief and mourning! Jerry held a special and unique place in each of your lives and hearts, that nothing can or will ever fill or replace.
I have very fond and vivid memories of Jerry visiting our farm often when I was a little girl (he would have been a teenager), and the very special bond he had with our pony, Roxy. There are several photos stashed away somewhere, of him riding Roxy and possibly giving Brenda and myself a ride as well.

May you find strength and comfort in each other, your faith and those who surround you, in the days, weeks, months and years ahead. Gone much too soon, but always remembered and loved!
