WEINER: Barrie of Bayfield, ON formerly Vancouver and Whistler, BC

November 5, 2023 By Haskett Funeral Homes 24 Condolences

WEINER: Barrie of Bayfield, ON formerly Vancouver and Whistler, BC

Passed away at home on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 with his wife Debra at his side.

Barrie was born in 1947 in Winnipeg, MB, son of the late Harry and Eva Weiner. He grew up in Vancouver and lived most of his adult life in Vancouver and Whistler.

In 1976 he met his soul mate and love of his life Debra while working on an audit in Prince Rupert, BC and they married, settling in Richmond, BC.

An accountant for 43 years, Barrie had a thriving practice in Vancouver and enjoyed getting to know and spending time with his clients, many of whom he worked with for most of those years forming many lifelong friendships.

Weekend and vacation time was special and he made the most of it, whether spending time enjoying his home and friends in Whistler, visiting family at the lake, or travelling.  Together with his wife Debra they discovered a love of RV ‘ing, and traveled extensively across Canada and the US and spent his recent winter seasons enjoying desert life in Borrego Springs, CA.

In 2015 Barrie retired and together he and Debra relocated to Bayfield looking forward to spending their summers at the lake with family and meeting new friends.

Age 75, Barrie lived a life full of laughter and love. He loved family, friends, his life’s work, golfing, biking, skiing, travelling and more recently, spending quiet time at home with Fergus.

All who knew him will remember him for his laughter, sense of humor, quick wit, gentle nature, generous spirit and his devotion to Debra.  His love of horse racing and Vegas was a joy to experience.  He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.

Barrie is survived by his loving wife Debra, brother Ted, sisters-in-law and their spouses Dawn and Scott Turner, and Dale MacArthur and Stuart Ewing, and his nieces and nephews David, Scott, Chris, Katie, Maddie and Zac, Charlie and Maisie. Predeceased his sister-in-law Geraldine Weiner.

A celebration of Barrie’s life will be held at 22 Bayfield Terrace, Bayfield ON on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 4 PM. Kindly RSVP by contacting the family at debramacarthurartist@gmail.com or 760-699-1118. On this day horse racing fans will be watching the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby and he would have been one of those fans! It was an event he never missed and always celebrated. The family would love for you to join them and in keeping with Barrie’s wishes, raise a glass of of Crown Royal from his “famous” collection while gathering to share memories, funny stories, remember his laughter, love of life and watch his favourite sporting event “The Run for the Roses”.

If joining the family in person is not possible, please join them in spirit. Tune into the event wherever you are, watch “the greatest two minutes in sports”, and maybe raise a glass of Crown Royal while turning your thoughts to a person who was well-loved and who will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

I was saddened to hear about Barrie. We grew up together in my high school and university days and were good buddies and had a LOT of fun. And some good tennis games. I moved to Calgary in 1973 and the only time I’ve seen him since was at Whistler in the 90’s. I was on the first tee, hit my drive and some guy races across the fairway, picks up my ball and sits on the side. What? It was him of course. He knew I was teeing off. Same ol Barrie. So although I haven’t seen him for quite awhile I’ll miss him. Good guy. And still have good memories. Harvey Thal.

Barrie was my closest friend and confidant in my teenage and university years. The zany and crazy adventures and exploits we enjoyed together are too numerous to recount but we had some wild and wonderful times. Over the ensuing years we slowly lost contact with each other but the fond (and humorous) memories persist. I was sorry to hear about Barrie’s passing. He will undoubtedly be sorely missed by Debra and the rest of his family and friends.

    Dear Debra,
It has been years since seeing you and Barry but I have many fond memories of the time Barry and I shared with you both.
I lost Barry two years ago to Pancreatic Cancer and still my heart aches. Losing the love of your life is difficult and I feel your grief.

    Debra
I am so sorry to hear of Barrie’s passing. He was my first friend at Peat Marwick in 1972 when I first arrived in Vancouver. And I think you and he baby sat my son Jason when he was just a few months old in 1974. He also joined me at Chambers Philips and we remained close until you both moved to Whistler. Despite a long absence I feel his loss.
Please pass on my heartfelt condolences to all his family

Debra, when Janice informed me of Barry‘s passing I was truly moved.
I have been out of touch and this was unexpected news for me.
I fondly remember how well you played off of each other and provided us with so many laughs at our gatherings in Whistler.

Debra, we are saddened to hear of Barrie’s passing. One of our best memories of Barrie is his red party sneakers. When he put those on we knew it was gonna be a fun evening. Barrie was a truly wonderful man and legend in the Nick North neighborhood. Greatly loved by many. We wish you all the best and hope for a visit the next time you are in the desert,

    Debra,
We were so saddened to learn of Barrie’s passing and are truly sorry for your loss.
We shared many great times with you and Barrie. We fondly remember fabulous dinner parties, with ‘casts of thousands’, in your NN home, and many golf rounds, laughing ourselves silly at Barrie’s great jokes and one-liners! We also remember vividly your fabulous costumes for themed events at the golf club!
Doug loved ribbing Barrie about ‘moving his woodpile’! He always said he and Barrie shared the same ‘sick’ sense of humour!
The last time I (Wendy) saw you was in front of Cardero’s in Vancouver, the day you were leaving for the East, RV loaded to the hilt. Little did I imagine that would be the last time I would see Barrie. We sincerely hope it’s not the last time we’ll see you! Doug and I really regret not getting together in Borrego Springs or in Palm Desert.
We hope you’ll keep in touch, Debra, and we wish you the very best, moving forward.

A great guy with an incomparable joi de vivre. I knew him personally and professionally and each relationship was very special—and that is saying something for an accountant! May his memory be a blessing.

    Dear Debra,

I was so saddened to learn of Barrie’s passing. I remember his wit and humor fondly, the times we spent together many years ago at Whistler and of your last visit to see Daryl and I in Napa.

I am so very sorry for your loss, please take good care of yourself and know that you will be in my thoughts.

I was so saddened to learn of Barrie’s passing. A joyful, wonderful guy – and valued friend and accountant – we were friends for some 40 years. As witty as he was – he was also very wise and serious. I would often seek his advice and counsel on the various challenges I had in my life…I truly loved and respected this guy. Rest in peace pal. May your life be for blessing. May God bless ..

My condolences Debra. He was a gem. I have only fond memories and laughter when I think of him. His banter was unparalleled keeping everyone on their toes. Did anyone love the ponies or sports more?
RIP Barrie, you will always be remembered. :) Killian

Beautifully said, and lovely picture memories of a life well lived. Hard to believe that Barrie is gone, but like all of us that will eventually pass on, he will not be forgotten.
