STUART: Lorna (Martin) formerly of Exeter

June 18, 2024 By Haskett Funeral Homes 15 Condolences

STUART: Lorna (Martin) formerly of Exeter

Passed away peacefully with her cherished daughter Susan by her side on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at the age of 91 years young. Beloved wife of the late Donald Earl Stuart (2002). Mother of Gregory Stuart, Nancy Smart, and Susan Stuart. Grandmother of 4 and great-grandmother of 2.

Lorna will be remembered as a kind, and gentle soul who touched the lives of many people through her 91 years. She was a staple in each community she lived in as a dedicated volunteer. She devoted her free time to making an impact on others. She was a part of the Wingham and District Hospital Auxiliary, volunteered at the Dove’s Nest, and no matter where she was living, she always became a member of the church in her community. In her “spare” time, she was an active bridge player and was always up for a game of cards.

A private funeral service was held. Interment Wingham Cemetery.

Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or Alzheimer Society Huron Perth would be appreciated by the family.

Grandma sparkled when she told stories, and I’m sorry I won’t get to hear more of them. The one that stands out most was when she fell for Grandpa, who was a runway model, as the story goes. He reached the end of the catwalk, lit a cigarette, and walked on back – cool and debonair as could be. And she fell for him.

She was also proud of the fact that she was the first female bank teller in her city, showing the 1940’s that women could do this civil life just as well as the men. I am grateful to come from someone who carved her own way in that regard, doing her bit to move our world forward.

Grandma once said that wild horses couldn’t hold her back from coming to see me graduate at McGill. Looks like I was a bit late to make that happen, but she’ll be with me in my memories as I cross that line next spring.

We were out of contact most of my life, as it was when she died. When our paths did cross, it was memorable.

Next time on the other side, Grandma. Happy Trails.
    With love,
    Martin

To Lorna’s family: I met Lorna for the first time on her way to Tim Hortons with her friend Lossy Fuller just after she moved to Exeter.
