Suddenly, on Sunday, October 6, 2019 of Lucan, at the age of 20. Cherished son of David and Denise (Ward) Smith of Lucan. Proud brother of Eric Smith. Much loved grandson of John and Patricia Ward of Lucan, and the late Harold and Evelyn (Buzz) Smith. Loved by his nana and papa Shirley and Douglas Harrower of Hensall. Devoted nephew of Scott and Tammy Harris of Hensall; Gayle and Ed Fox, Russell Smith, Wayne and Heather Smith, Bob and Brenda Smith, Harold and Mary Smith, and Peter and Patty Smith all of Lucan, Sharon Smith, and Paul and Cheri Smith all of Exeter, Larry Smith of Rodney, Sharon and Tony Martens of Goderich, Darlene and Rick Forrest of RR 3 Ailsa Craig, and Jeanette Smith and Doug House of Crediton. Special cousin of Chloe, and Aiden Harris, Justin and Erin Ross, Jason Smith, Brittany Babbage, and Ritchie Forrest. Nick will be deeply missed by several cousins, extended family, and his many friends. Dear friend of Tatyana Edwards. He will be missed by his pup Tucker, and lizard Randall.
Nick was completing his electrical apprenticeship with Selectra Inc. He was a hard-working and determined young man. His infectious smile and red hair will be missed by so many, both at the rink with the Lucan Irish and the Medway Cowboys, or on the baseball field with the Lucan-Ilderton Athletics and the Medway Cowboys.
Visitation will be held at Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, LUCAN on Wednesday from 2 – 4 and 6 – 9 PM. The funeral service will be held at the Lucan Community Memorial Centre, 263 Main Street, Lucan on Thursday, October 10th at 11 AM.
In Nick’s memory, donations to Canadian Mental Health Association, or the Lucan Irish Jr. C Hockey Club would be appreciated by the family.
We are always willing to go where called upon but this image shows a visual of the communities that our included in our initial transportation fee. We offer a 40km radius from any of our 5 locations (Arva (London), Exeter, Lucan, Seaforth, and Zurich). Any mileage beyond the included 40km will be charged a rate of $2.50/km (one way travel only).

Nick was always a quieter guy when I encountered him in the back halls of the arena but he never missed giving me that incredible grin that only he had! Whenever I had the chance to speak with Nick he was polite, kind, and soft spoken.
Watching Nick play Junior hockey over the past few years was always a treat. I knew exciting, and yes, unpredictable things would happen when Nick was out on the ice! Over the past couple of years my son Jake #44 and Nick were very often defense partners so I watched Nick as much as I watched my own son. Nick played hockey his way and it wasn’t uncommon for Nick to stand up to opposing players that were much bigger than he was. I think Nick had a passion for fairness and he had a tendency to seek it on occasions he felt the referees had not done so! Nice liked the playing field to be leveled so to speak! Many a fan and family member could be heard in the stands cheering for Nick–he had the support of many when he was out on the ice. It was common for some of us to blame his feisty hockey play on his flaming red hair, but truth be told, I think it was his passion for the game and fair play that created his spirited play on the rink.
One of my fondest moments was when Nick scored possibly our most important goal last season (his family will know when I mean!) that tied a game that we would eventually go on to win. I was so excited about getting to announce Nick as “Player of the Game” for that game and present him with the small reward. He certainly earned it that day.
My son told me that Nick cared a lot for his teammates. Perhaps this was another reason why he felt so passionately about protecting them when it was his turn out on the ice.
My heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends in this most difficult of times.

I was so sad to hear of Nick’s passing. As Nick’s next door neighbor I have many memories of playing outside with Nick and Eric. He was always so energetic and friendly. My heart goes out to you all during this heartbreaking time.

Nick and my niece Tatyana dated for the last three years. I had the chance to meet and speak with him in several occasions. I remember this time last year he was consoling our family as we were dealing with the loss of my father on Oct 6th. I’m still at a loss of words about this as I just spoke with him less than two months ago as he and Tatyana were on a camping trip for her birthday. May he find peace!
