MOMMERSTEEG: Martin John of Exeter

Passed away peacefully at Huron Hospice on Saturday September 14, 2024 at the age of 85.   Loving husband of Nellie (Bosch) for 59 years, just short of their 60th wedding anniversary on September 26th.  Proud father of Michael (Cathy Evans), Linda Middegaal (Jim), Kellie Williams (Owen Moriarty) and Sylvia Wiebe.  Adored Papa of Tyler Middegaal (Hanah Phan), Courtney Middegaal (Brock Spencer), Brooke Regier (Tyler), Kristina Lang (Brian), Dylan Keaney (Bella Piccolo), Ryerson Williams, Makenzie Williams, Megan Wiebe, Ashley Wiebe (John Mueller), and Kyle Wiebe. Great grandpa of Benjamin and Emilie Lang, Quinn Regier and Sloane Spencer. Fondly remembered by the Mommersteeg and Bosch families.  Predeceased by his parents Marten and Antonia (Van Esch) Mommersteeg and son-in-law John Wiebe.

Born and raised with a love for the land, Dad farmed most of his life, and even after moving to town, his passion for agriculture never waned. He loved to chat about the weather, how the crops were doing, and could always offer a perspective on farming, no matter the season.  He found peace in his flower beds, tending to them with the same care he once gave to his fields. Dad also loved to work with his bird feeders, often engaged in a good-natured battle to keep the squirrels at bay.  Dad was also an avid reader of the news, always hungry for knowledge and understanding of the world around him. With a newspaper often on his lap, he stayed informed, sharing stories and insights with those around him.   Above all, he cherished the times he spent with Mom by his side and visiting with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His greatest joy came from these family gatherings, where his good-natured stories brightened every room.

Visitation will be held at the Haskett Funeral Home, 456 Main Street Exeter on Wednesday, September 18th from 4-6 PM. A funeral mass will be held at Precious Blood Catholic Church, 200 Sanders Street West, Exeter on Thursday, September 19th at 11 AM. Prayers will be said in the funeral home Wednesday afternoon at 3:45 PM. A recording of Martin’s funeral mass will be posted at www.facebook.com/haskettfh. Interment at Exeter Cemetery.

Donations would be greatly appreciated by the family to Huron Hospice, an incredible facility with an exceptional team who treated dad with such dignity, compassion, and special care in his final weeks.

My sincere condolences in the loss of your dear husband, father and grandfather. Martin was such a nice guy. I always remember him happy and smiling. I first met Martin serving him gas in Zurich in my teens. Then as a neighbour in Exeter and when he volunteered at the Re-Store. We had some good chats over the many years when we’d bump into one another. Cherish your many great memories of him. My thoughts and prayers remain with you all.

Condolence from Tracey Stanlake on September 25th, 2024 3:34 PM

My sincerest condolences to all.

I always enjoyed working with Martin at the ReStore. We had many a long chats about many things… including religion. I always looked forward to Martin and Herman coming back with their load of stuff for the store and the stories they had about their trips… it would always bring a smile or laugh. Martin always looked out for everyone. On one stormy day when I wasn’t allowed to close Martin was the only one who stayed with me till the end of the day. All we could do was watch the snow fall and talk… and talk… and talk… lol.

I will miss him
