    Please accept my sincere sympathies.
I first met Joan in 1980 when we moved to London and I began work at University Hospital. Together we worked on 7th heaven, as we called it back then. I was an inexperienced nurse and Joan was my “team leader”, a job she did with considerable compassion and skill. I learned much from her and still consider her to be a significant mentor in my career. We shared a love of neuroscience nursing and I will remember her always as being professional, efficient, kind and empathetic to her patients, families and her staff.
I know she was a skilled crafts person and I remember her coming to visit as my family grew, always with a hand made gift for the new family member. Her kindness will not be forgotten.
Joan will live in my memory, she helped to shape my life in a positive way.
I trust that ultimately your many happy memories will ease your grief.
    My thoughts are with you.

Dear family of Joan…..my sister, Alice Vanderweg, and I were privileged to share classroom in our 2 room school in Granton, with Joan! What a joy she was, always, with a laugh and smile for all. I loved going in the barn at your farm, Joan would have to do her chores. I remember David and Dorothy, and baby Kathryn (?) with her beautiful bald head as a baby……her Mom said that babies who’s hair comes in later, always have lovely hair when it comes in. And I don’t remember there being a Peter….we moved from Granton in 1963 so maybe he was born after that??? Wonderful memories of the Garrett family! So very sorry to Dave and all Joan’s family of your loss….I am sure she will be sorely missed. Prayers for God’s comfort to you. Hugs, Agnes Zietsma/Claus

As I watched the service today, I remembered meeting Joan Garrett and her friend Gayle Mardlin during our very first week in grade nine. Moving through the halls of Medway was a bit overwhelming for all of us, and I knew I was lucky to meet two “salt of the earth”, genuinely kind, honest and caring young ladies. Like Gayle, Joan lived her entire life without altering from her wonderful unassuming but strong character, and love of family that is part of the legacy she leaves. If I recall correctly, Joan and Dave were married in a very private ceremony. There is some comfort in wondering if today worked out just the way Joan may have planned, but we all do look forward to a day that we can be together to offer our support to you, her extended family and a community who will long remember a special person.

To the McClary and Garrett Families
Joan taught me piano lessons about 50 years ago! She was always so kind and patient with me even though she could tell I hardly ever practiced! Over the years, Joan always exhibited such grace and dignity as she faced her health battles. I pray that the Lord’s strength and love will surround you and your family during this time of sadness and may you take comfort in His promises.
She has fought the good fight,
    She has finished the race,
    She has kept the faith,
Now there is a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award her on that day…
