Marvin Stanley Smout MD FRCP(C)

March 11, 2006 By Haskett Funeral Homes Leave A Condolence

Marvin Stanley Smout MD FRCP(C)

MARVIN STANLEY SMOUT, MD FRCP(C). March 11, 2006 at London Health Sciences Centre University Campus, London, Ontario in his 77th year.  Dear husband of Anne Doreen (Atkinson) and father of Ellen, Jennifer (Gregg Barrett) and Laura Gedies (Paul). Dr. Smout was born in St. Thomas, Ontario and attended the University of Western Ontario where he received his M.D. Degree. He continued with post graduate medical education at UWO and later at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) where he commenced his academic career as an instructor in pathology. In 1959, Dr. Smout began his 31year career at Victoria Hospital, 25 years as Chief of Anatomic Pathology. An active faculty member at UWO, he taught pathology to over 2,400 students in 30 consecutive medical school classes. He was selected as Honorary Class President several times and in 1973 was the recipient of the “Class of ’62 Award” as the teacher who has contributed in an outstanding manner to the graduating class. Dr. Smout was a role model for many residents and a generation of practicing pathologists. He was an examiner in Surgery for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and an enthusiastic researcher and author and contributed to numerous professional organizations including the Ontario Association of Pathologists, and as an Ontario Delegate to the College of American Pathologists. Upon his retirement in 1991, Dr. Smout was awarded the designation of Professor Emeritus by UWO and received a life membership in the Ontario Medical Association. Dr. Smout’s interest in natural history began in 1942 when he joined the St. Thomas-Elgin Field Naturalists’ Club. This led him to appointments to the Point Pelee National Park Rare Bird Records Committee, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority and the Fanshawe Pioneer Village. His love and enthusiasm for bird watching inspired contributions to “Birders’ Journal” and “American Birds” and photographs published in the “Globe and Mail”. Dr. Smout’s interest in history led to his role as Chair of the Archives Committee of Victoria Hospital from 1973-1990. He coordinated the publication of “Growing to Serve, the History of the First One Hundred Years of Victoria Hospital”. In his retirement, Dr. Smout served on the Boards of the London Community Foundation and the London Health Sciences Foundation. His demonstrated standard of professionalism and his dedication to family, career and community will be remembered.  The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00pm Thursday, March 16, 2006, at Museum London, 421 Ridout Street North, London. Arrangements entrusted to C. Haskett and Son Funeral Home, Lucan, 1-877-227-4211. Condolences may be forwarded through www.haskettfh.com. Donations may be made to the Marvin S. Smout Endowment Fund c/o the London Community Foundation for the purpose of funding the Marvin S. Smout Resident Research Award (MSS Fund) at the London Health Sciences Centre or to the London Health Sciences Foundation.
