Suddenly, and too soon, at South Huron Hospital, Exeter on Thursday, April 7, 2016 of Hensall, Andrew was taken from us in his 51st year. Cherished husband and best friend of Linda (Van Dyk) for 26 years. Best Dad to Melanie, Nathan, and Leah. Much loved son of Martin Martens and Magdalena Kester (1970), and his second mom Anastasia “Lil” (neé Denomme) (Hoffman) Martens (2015). Dear brother and brother-in-law of Henry and Brenda, Mathilda and Steve Flear, Tina and Tim Doherty, Marj and Kevin MacGregor, Jeff and Karen, Tim and Annette, Liz and Paul Clark; Mary and Danny Muir, Marg Henderson, Connie and Mike Marion, Ken and Margie Van Dyk, Ed Van Dyk, Ted and Leanne Van Dyk, Wilma Van Dyk, Rosie and Mike Flanagan, and Steve Van Dyk and Barb Kerr. Andrew will be remembered by his nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, the Hoffman family, and his friends who were like family. Andrew owned and operated Forever Furniture (Antique and Oak Furniture) in St. Joseph and Sarnia for about 30 years, but his first love was his family.
Friends may call at the Haskett Funeral Home, 370 William Street, Exeter on Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Precious Blood Church, 200 Sanders Street West, Exeter on Monday, April 11th at 11 AM with Father Peter Keller presiding. Interment Exeter Cemetery.
Donations to Compassion Canada (the charity where Melanie works), or the Children’s Wish Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

Had the pleasure of knowing Andrew through my great Uncle John and other family members, and even as a neighbor for a short time as a kid. But it was as an employee at Antique and Oak Furniture that I got to know Andrew best.
Riding along to fill deliveries I learned a lot from Andrew in a short time about hard work and the importance of hands on management in business. He was the type of boss that was clearly at work long before the rest of us, even when we started at 6 am, yet also the type that took an interest in you, and would treat his crew to cold beers from time to time, at the end of a summer work day and share a laugh.
I always saw Andrew as a role model, and it is a real shame that his time was cut too short. He achieved a lot in his life, – built an impressive business from the ground up, spoke fondly of his wife and family, and was always down to earth and kind. The type of person that had an impact on many of those he met along the way, and will be remembered long after his passing.
