The first time I met John was when Natalie brought him for lunch. John loved the potato soup and homemade bread and after a couple of hours I was hoping Natalie would bring him for more visits. There were many visits and I wasn’t sure if it was me he was coming to see or the eggs he loved from my bantam hens! John loved making scrambled eggs, omelets or anything to do with eggs for Natalie and I. John welcomed Reg into the family – we enjoyed many wonderful meals with John, Natalie and Mackenzie, great football and hockey game evenings, with John making sure Reg always had something special to eat. John of course made the best Caesar salad in the world! Every Christmas was extra special and we love you for that. Thank you John for being a loving husband, wonderful Father and a perfect son-in-law. You were kind, supportive, generous and never expected anything in return. We miss you so much. Jacqueline and Reg Lownie

    Nataile & Mackenzie

I am so shocked about the loss of John. He shared so many memories with such a variety of people. I have known John since the early 80’s & then moved to California, but have kept in touch all these years. John & I always said “we need to get together more often,” something we say to so many people, now realizing that it might never happen. We are all gifted to have had him in our lives, and called him a friend.

Natalie & Mackenzie, I was only able to meet you once, but I know how happy John was to have you in his life. My heart goes out to you with the loss of your husand and father.

    My thoughts are with you.

I am so saddened to hear of this great loss that so many will share. Working with John for five years was one of the greatest experiences of my life. To this day I tell everyone he was and always will be the best boss I ever had. He was always so kind and a great mentor for many. The love he had for you too showed in everything he did, from the way he spoke of you or just the smile that he so often had when you were in the office. I will never forget everything that he did for me. My thoughts and prayers are with you both as you grieve a wonderful husband, father and friend.

With all my love and sympathy,
    Debby

Hello, I am Paul Knox’s step-sister Suzanne (Suzy Rogers, now Ross). I remember John from years ago in Toronto and especially at our cottage near Buckhorn. We had many fun times back then, and I know that John and Paul still very much enjoyed each other’s company in recent years. I was so sorry to hear of his passing, and at such a young age. John always had a smile and a joke – I hope you keep those images fresh in your memories forever. My heart goes out to you all. With affection, Suzanne

John’s passing has rocked me to my core. Over the 15 years since I first met John, we grew to share a special bond. Although I only met him in person on four or five occasions; we enjoyed each other’s company by phone on a regular basis. He was truly engaging, witty, insightful, clever, well informed, introspective, spontaneous, well rounded, compassionate and all those other adjectives that most men wish that they would have ascribed to themselves. Many of the loudest and longest laughs I have had in my life were shared with John. I will truly miss his calls and his friendly, engaging banter that reflected the deeply genuine and unassuming nature of someone I truly admired. Although, over the years we touched on virtually every topic imaginable; at the end of the day, he was above all, truly devoted to both Nathalie and Mackenzie.

Mackenzie, I have to impress upon how lucky your dad felt to have you as his daughter. You were truly and will always remain the apple of your father’s eye. You made his heart sing as loud as the sky is blue; a song that often rang through in his conversations with me.

The world would certainly be a better place with more John Reads-sadly there will always only be one; but how lucky we all were to have known him. I will continue to think of and miss John every day and will always remember him as a true friend and a wonderful gift.

    Dear Natalie and Mackenzie,
We are truly sorry for your loss. John was a kind and thoughtful individual, always with good word of encouragement, and supportive of all the kids who participated in the equestrian world. It was impressive to always see him at every event, including most lessons for his daughter which he always spoke so highly of. We will miss his presences.

    Natalie and MacKenzie,

It was with great sadness that I heard of Uncle John’s accident. My very deepest sympathies are with both of you at this incredibly difficult time.

Uncle John was only 11 years older than I am so I have many fond memories of him especially at Grandma and Grandpa Read’s house when he was in his late teens and early 20’s. Uncle John teaching Grandma’s budgie, Joey, to say funny things when Grandma and Grandpa were away. We thought they were funny.. Grandma, not so much. Uncle John and his neighbour Larry joking around and entertaining us all. Getting bell bottom jeans as a gift with a 30″ bell making my sisters and I the envy of everyone in our class at public school. The funny discussions and debates.. John always throwing in something to make it interesting in a playful way. His hearty laugh.

As years went by his work ethic, sense of style and determination made him a successful businessman. His kind heart and compassionate side made him a good husband and father. Your wedding Natalie was the last family function with both Grandma and Grandpa Read out with the family. It was a wonderful evening and we all had a great time.

MacKenzie, I only met you a few times, but it was obvious that you were the light of his life. In reading the other notices on here you can tell that he loved being so involved in your life.

What I wouldn’t give now to give him a big hug and tell him that I love him. May your happy memories and the love that you know he had for both of you help you in your grief and bring a smile to your faces.

    With deepest sympathy,
    Pam, Rachel and Mitchell Hand
