FILSON: Hugh of Ilderton, born in Woodrow, SK

October 5, 2014 By Haskett Funeral Homes 48 Condolences

FILSON: Hugh of Ilderton, born in Woodrow, SK

Passed away at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital on Sunday, October 5, 2014, in his 90th year. Loving husband of Kathy (Milne) Filson and the late Margaret (Wilkie) Filson (1967).  Dear father of Ellen Filson (Jack [2013]), Barbara and Dave Johnson, Nancy and Alan Ingram, David and Carol Filson and Kenneth and Karen Filson, Raymond and Caroline Filson and step-father of Heather Thomson, and Laura Laing.  Also missed by 21 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.  Predeceased by his infant brother Alfred Arthur Filson.  Hugh’s community involvement was far reaching.  He became an auctioneer in 1955, and had his very first sale with Tom Robson in 1956, which began the life-long, successful partnership of Filson & Robson.  Among the many sales, Hugh sold the Ontario Bull Sale, Royal Winter Fair, and sale barn cattle across the province.  He was a long time 4-H leader and Junior Farmers Member.  Hugh was past-president of the Western Fair and was still an active senator in 2014.  He was past-president of the Ilderton Fair and their long-time announcer.  Hugh was named Honourary Agriculturalist by the University of Guelph and was very involved with the Canadian Swine Breeders Association, Cattlemen’s Association and Canadian Limousin Association.  He was inducted in into the Middlesex County Hall of Fame in 2002.  Auctioneering and agriculture in this area and beyond have been forever changed and enriched because of Hugh’s passion and involvement.

Friends may call at the Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, Lucan on Tuesday evening 7-9 PM and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM, where the funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 9th at 1:30 PM with Rev. Pirie Mitchell and Rev. Barbara Clark officiating.  Private family interment Birr United Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ilderton Agricultural Society, Canadian Diabetes Association, or Heart and Stroke Foundation, would be appreciated by the family.

We’re sad to hear that Madison and Jillian have lost their Great Grandpa and their Mommy has lost her Grandpa Hugh. Our sincere condolences go out to the family, especially Jennifer and Dane, Carol
    and Dave and their children.
Our paths would have only crossed one time, when Jennifer was a bride. But we can appreciate the huge impact Mr. Filson made on his community over a lifetime of 90 years. Sincerely, Carol and Ken.
