Peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 7, 2021, of Arva at the age of 76. Cherished husband and best friend of Eleanor (Schram) Edmondson for over 54 years. Proud father of David, and William. Dear brother-in-law of John and Aleana Schram, and Marcia Schram. Loving uncle of Elizabeth and Grady, Katherine and Andrew, Peter and Jen, Michelle, and Andrew. Predeceased by his parents, William and Kathleen (Leighton) Edmondson, aunts Jessie, Ada, and Mary, and uncle Jack and his wife Helen, cousin Sandra and Murry Nelson.
Al led a full life built around his pillars of community, integrity and honesty. Within that he was an explorer, a creative and a visionary in all aspects of his life. Al had an extremely rewarding teaching career spanning more than 35 years. He pushed the envelopes of how teachers taught and inspired staff and students alike to seek their full potential. No dream was bigger or more important than any other and Al did whatever he could to support those around him to grow to be better people. If there was a path to find a better solution Al would go down it and rally those around to join him as his equal. He had a calmness and warmth that was uniquely his own and always acted with others’ best interest in mind. He was kind and gentle but certainly was not afraid to stand up for what he believed in and trusted his moral compass, and for good reason.
Al continued to follow his passion for community by serving as a proud member of the Ilderton Lion’s Club for over 40 years and in municipal politics, as a two-term councillor, Deputy Mayor and finally Mayor of Middlesex Centre Township for almost two decades including 2 years as Warden of Middlesex County. His success came from his simple quest to be authentic and do what is best for the community. Of course among all of his accomplishments throughout his life, his family remained his proudest achievement and greatest priority. He was a great husband and father and truly loved being both. Whether you knew Al as Mr. E, Big Al, Mayor Al or as the Mega Mayor, he always made people laugh, and feel welcome.
Al was fortunate to have some wonderful care during his time with his Amyloidosis diagnosis and wanted to send a sincere thank you to Dr. P. Teefy, and Kim for the unwavering support, nurses Subin, and Raji, Dr F .Rehman and Dr Van Dam, who all worked to ensure his comfort and facilitate his staying at home.
A private family memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 13th at 11:30 AM with Reverend Shelia Macgregor officiating. Cremation with interment St. John’s Cemetery, Arva. I was in a chat about favorite teachers and of course I didn’t have to think twice. This is how I came across the passing of Mr. Edmondson.
Mr E was a very special teacher. I was lucky to have him as a teacher for 3 years, grade 6, gr 7/8 and again for 7/8. I remember he asked the parents and kids to come in and see him , this was a couple of days before school started. He was telling us about a new student that will be in our class.We were to be understanding and patient. This student grew so much with Mr . E’s guidance and support from class mates. There are so many wonderful school memories. And who didn’t just love to watch him write. Such an artistic flow. I think I still have some of my report cards. I think of him fondly. I am just sorry that I am too late at reaching out . I wanted to tell him how much of an impression he had on me. We were assigned to memorize a poem and this was a big deal for me as I struggled with dyslexia. I memorized , The Wraggle Taggle Gypsies O. I think I impressed him that day. And the 50’s dances, and doing school plays. I don’t think Mr Edmondson worked a day in his life because he loved his job. I remember a patient of mine once asked me if I loved my job, Yes , I said. Well that’s good then you’ll never have to work a day in your life. I found joy at being a nurse and I saw joy and happiness in Mr . Edmondson. Many years later I ran into, literally ran into Mr.Edmondson at Bon Echo.
May all your joys , and loving memories always dance in your hearts.
So I guess when I get to heaven I will have a nice cup of tea with him and talk fondly of the memories.

Mr. Edmondson (The BigE to me) was my grade 8 teacher at Oxbow and a true mentor and friend to all. I have so many, many memories, some being: that twinkle in his eye, him convincing the landowners next to the school to allow us to run cross-country through their farm, learning to X-country ski, learning how to use a router, being allowed to design the Ilderton Park, the tears in his eyes when he told me his son had had an operation on his eyes and had seen birds on a wire for the first time, orienteering, survival game, his many sayings that have stood me well as I navigated life after grade 8 including “Of all your troubles great and small, the greatest are those that don’t happen at all!”

A friend told me about Al’s death the other day, and I was saddened. Although, our lives have drifted apart in recent years, since we moved away from Arva, I remember Al as a good friend and colleague, to begin with, and then as our Mayor in Middlesex Centre for many years. During that time, we had many discussions about life and conditions in Midd’s’x Centre.
In contemplating writing this tribute, I wondered if very many of those who knew Al, knew him as “Big Al,”as we did in educational circles in London. I soon discovered, when I read the obit, that many did. Al was first an educator. He taught elementary school but one of his specialties was geography. I was a geography head for many years in a variety of high schools in London and organizer of the London Geography Teachers Association. Al attended our meetings regularly.
Al was also a man of strong faith. We pray that his wife and family will find solace in that, and depend on God for strength in this time of sorrow.

As an alumnus of Oxbow — Mr E. is how he is known to me. Many a student will remember his famous handstands and the ensuing pocket treasures that would spill out. I remember how for a family without a second car, he would pick up me and my siblings on #4 Highway so we could attend early morning sports team practices. He made a point of encouraging my interest in English by finding mentors from secondary school to come and speak to me about future studies in English. He in turn wanted me to tutor younger students — maybe he saw the potential teacher in me. When he brought a small group of us to our first Gilbert & Sullivan play in Stratford he said to me — I think you’ll be coming back a lot to this place Melanie. I have many memories of the specific actions he took to expand my world. His family should know that he made a positive impact — the best trait of a teacher.

Ellen and family I lived in the same area of south London as Al. He moved the year I move there so I didn’t meet him but all my friends would talk about him and what a great guy he was. When I started a wood working shop I met him. He had a shop and would sell wood.. Always honest and fair. When he became a member of council I found him still helpful, still honest and forward thinking. He supported the green initiatives of electric cars and solar panels and he spent time with my son and others supporting their environmental efforts. He will continue to be missed for a long time.

This is such sad news. Mr. Edmondson was my grade 8 teacher at Oxbow. He was really exceptional, I think in large part because he was such a tremendous role model for us. He taught with joy and that slightly wry smile. He had a knack for cultivating talent and confidence at what I now appreciate can be a terribly awkward and confusing age. He made us feel seen and that we mattered. He demonstrated considerable empathy and kindness to kids who I suspect had rougher home lives than mine. He introduced us to woodworking! He was as warm, engaged and charismatic as ever when I would run into him as an adult at the Ilderton Fall Fair, or a Lions thing or, probably the last time I saw him, my Dad’s visitation. I’m blessed to have had this astounding man have a influential part in my life !
I was fortunate to have Al as a teacher in grades 7 and 8. A time when you are so receptive and impressionable trying to figure out your way in life, options and become a beneficial member of your community. Al was there giving you lessons and tools to figure it out, leading by example !
Al took us on an an amazing east coast trip for 2 weeks. 30 or so grade 7 and 8 students, 3 chaperones and his family in a school bus and a pickup truck. Our parents probably thought he was delirious, demented, but they absolutely trusted him. Al’s classroom went mobile ! Al and Ellen let me stay in their home for 2 days before we left so I could go.

Through the years whenever we ran into each other there was always a heartfelt hug and time to chat.
I look at his picture, his eyes, his smile,
gives you an accurate depiction of the man ! Precious, genuine, candid, honest original, faithful, straightforward, respectful, my interpretation of my teacher and friend !
Al’s life hasn’t ended because of the enormous amount of lives he has touched, his memory goes on and on !

Ellen, Dave, & Will — I’m so sorry to hear the news of Al’s passing. He taught me in 84-85 and we were a loud group, some of us were, anyway – and he’d get loud with us sometimes, in a good way! I can’t begin to tell you what a perfect fit “Mr E.” was for “Grade 8” and how ideally he prepared us for the high school years ahead. We didn’t talk then now about the rollercoaster ride of being young and the ups and downs and how you have to push through things to get where you need to, but Al was brilliant at spotting when you needed a pep talk, and when you needed a bit of a non-physical kick to get working harder in academics or athletics or getting along.
You don’t realize moving on to high school that it’s hard to have that “personal connection” with teachers at that level – you can rediscover that in university, but you’re close to an adult by then. I remember thinking that in the early days at Medway, that what we had with “Mr. E.” was special.
I last ran into him when my dad & I were next to him and a friend at a London Knights game in 2002 – he remembered everything about me and was so encouraging, and everyone deserves to have a few teachers like that as they move us forward.
I’m sorry for your loss and do know the impact he had on so very, very many of us who crossed his path. He left an indelible footprint with so many of his students.

I first met Al in 1976 when I arrived at Oxbow School as a new teacher and it seemed like that was the start of many wonderful encounters I would have with Al including being on the staff at the Section 27 together and taking part in the annual July 1 breakfast in Bryanston dressed in all our wonderful Canada Day finery and after donating blood at the Ilderton Community Centre it was often Al who served me my refreshments and we could get caught up on our recent travel escapades. One funny incident I remember when David and Will were young was the 2 of them coming in to Oxbow School with their mother and I noticed that one of them had one blue boot on and one red boot. I commented on the nice boots and he said “My brother has a pair just the same. ” I had the honour of decorating the cake for your 40th wedding anniversary. Mom and I were honoured to attend that event too. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you get through this difficult time in your life. He was a very fine man indeed.

It was with sadness and surprise that I learned about the passing of my high school friend and competitor. I can still remember all the basketball and football games we competed against one another. He was a great guy and will be missed by all that knew him.

I am so very sorry for this deep loss. As I reflect on Al Edmondson, I smile. I met Al while working with VON. We accomplished many policies together. Although we worked hard, we usually did so while laughing. Just a few memories are in regards to his big feet & how often he would trip over them. And many would not know that Al is responsible for the aerial view of VON friends, forming our name which was used on brochures across the country for many years.
Al Edmondson was a great man. A man that I am honored to call my friend.

I was truly saddened to hear of Al’s passing. As others have said, he was a key person in so many lives, supporting, mentoring, inspiring, and embedding concepts of moral behavior that have had effect far beyond Middlesex County.
For me he was a teacher at Oxbow who recognized grammar was not my strength, and he provided an extra week of focused grammar teaching at the end of summer vacation before school started. It gave me the confidence to improve rather than give up. He posted messages at the top of our classroom with inspiring and guiding themes, such as, “freedom is the right to do what you ought to do, not what you want to do”. That message and others, have stuck with me for over 40 years.
His summer trip with a school bus load of kids out to the East Coast of Canada was epic. I have so many happy memories of that trip, and still pull out my old snapshots with fondness.
I occasionally bumped into Al over the years since then, he remained a happy, positive person who was a pleasure to chat with.
Al, you will be missed by many.

We first met when Barb and Al taught together but friendship grew as Bev and Al worked together for so many years on Middlesex Centre’s Council and on Middlesex County Council. Mr. Edmondson was my teacher many years ago at Oxbow Public School. He was an amazing, kind, and one of the greatest teachers I had. The best thing he taught me was courage and perseverance. I remember when Mr. Edmondson had an accident cutting his fingers. My mum also had an accident and lost two of her fingers on a press at her job, at a young age.
In gym class we were learning “dance”. His hand was bandaged up. He asked for a volunteer to dance with to show the class the dance steps. I volunteered and got to dance with my teacher!! I’ve always remembered that day!!
I believe Al is in the arms of Our Lord Jesus Christ at peace and surrounded with love.

He was always so encouraging and supportive of me in my first years as a teacher. I was constantly learning from how he taught with such passion for the kids. He had such amazing ideas to include all students in wanting to learn but at the same time, was a no nonsense teacher. I loved that about him. Al was so “down to earth” and spoke with truth and wisdom. He certainly had an amazing impact on my life as a teacher.

Where do I begin. Mr E. was by the far the most influential teacher I had at Oxbow. I was not the best student and other teachers could have cared less about my needs but Mr. E. made me feel like I mattered. He made me feel more confident in myself. He liked me. It mattered to me. I was lucky enough to have him for grade 7 (for the first time) and then grade 8. So many memories. From going to Fort York to travelling to out east to Newfoundland and PEI. I remember his penmanship was impeccable, beautiful, an artist. He was at my wedding in 1990. When I was walking down the isle with my dad to my future husband, he was there. Our eyes connected and I started crying not because I was sad but because he meant the world to me. He always will. This news breaks my heart. The end of an era. I love you Big Al. You are forever in heart and mind. You will be missed Mr E. I love you.
