Over the years, She was a very dear neighbour and friend of my mom Brenda’s.

I’ve been remembering my Aunt Peg, thinking about her and the family, putting pen to paper. This is an excerpt from some of my remembrances:

Aunt Peg upheld many of the famous McLeod values with her passion for reading, horticulture, gardening, and nature—and her fondness for porridge. She liked to gather with friends or family and talk, measured and thoughtful. But she was also a keen observer, a sharp intellect, and a good listener. She asked attentive questions. Her thoughtfulness and empathy for others is something that stands out for me. She never forgot a birthday and always phoned family members and nieces and nephews, so this was a ritual that I remember, especially in the last 15 years or so.

At Christmastime, I was always amazed at the number of greeting cards she received from friends and family, all pinned to woven banners around the room and over doorways. She had many friends in the Seaforth area and also maintained friendships with people in faraway countries, keeping in touch over many decades.

Peg loved to travel, and set out on many trips. When my husband, Daryn, and I lived and worked in Japan for a year in 1993/4, Peg came to visit us. She combined the trip with a visit to see friends in Malaysia. She stayed with us for several days, maybe a week. I remember worrying about how she’d make it up the very steep hill where our apartment perched. As a survivor of childhood polio, Peg had trouble walking long distances. I seem to recall lots of taxi rides. I don’t recall any complaints. She was fascinated by the Japanese culture and enjoyed visiting some gardens with us and our friends. At the time, I thought it was quite brave of her to travel so far and by herself. I remember seeing her get off the plane and experiencing a flood of feeling for family. I’d been homesick and our meeting included a very good hug!

It’s hard to say good-bye to someone who’s been a constant in your life.

Aunt Peg, I see you with a stack of good books, a basket of knitting, a purring cat curled on your lap—and your loved ones all around.

    I will miss you.
    You will be missed.

Our sincere sympathy to the family of Peg DeJong. She was so active in our community volunteering and always ready to answer gardening questions. An active member in Seaforth Horticultural Society. When we visited my Mom at Seaforth Manor our little girls at the time always wanted to walk Grandma down to see the tulip lady. Your Dad and Mom’s red tulips made a beautiful statement on the street corner lot.

I will miss seeing Peg in the library. She always asked for the most interesting books and her choices showed a keen intellect. She and her girls were long time supporters of the library, as was her mother before them and I feel we have lost a sum greater than its parts in losing Peg and Mary.

My sincere sympathies are extended to Elizabeth, Esther and families, as well as Peg’s Brazilian family, during this difficult time. I grew to know Peg during my high school years, when Peg and her family opened their home to an exchange student from Brazil. At that time, and in the years to follow, I always felt welcomed at Peg’s home during Cris’ visits. She was a warm and caring person and will be greatly missed.

Sorrowfully missed, Margaret was always sharp as a tack and I’ll miss her “sticking it to me”! Even if I only knew her a short while, she could always quickly roll with the punch line. I will greatly miss her good humour. It was an honour knowing her. I firmly believe that both Margaret and Dirk (Dick) will continue to be watching over our gardening endeavours and smiling!
    God rest!
