Over the few short months that I knew Deb, I developed a deep respect for her. The very first time I met her, I was impressed with her intelligence and quick wit. Despite all that she was going through with things that would have worn down the average person, she remained stoic, practical, and strong. Whenever I would stop by to see her, she would always ask how I was doing, which at first surprised me because I have rarely had a patient who put concern for their caregivers before themselves. That unselfishness is why she made such an incredible nurse: She found a calling that was a perfect match for her unflagging care and compassion, even in the face of her own devastating illness. Despite her young age, she carried herself with grace and quiet confidence, which made her wise beyond her years. Her humility was inspiring, and I always left her side with a feeling of peace, not of sadness. Deb wouldn&&single&&t have wanted me to feel sad for her. I feel truly blessed to have met her because I was able to share in the miracle of who she was. All the staff on Palliative Care agree that Deb is a woman whom we shall never forget. She was a gift to all of us. I miss her smile and laughter, her intelligence and wit, her concern and compassion, her strength and beauty. I just plain miss Deb. Thanks to all of you for the patience and strength you showed to our staff during your very long journey. You were always calm and kind when I saw you, and I appreciated that beyond description: I believe that Deb received those gifts from you. I was unable to attend Deb&&single&&s visitation and funeral, but I was there in heart and spirit. I think that Deb knew that she was special to me, and that I will always carry a piece of her with me… and because of that, I will always carry a piece of yourselves as well. Thank-you for all that you and Deb have given me: I couldn&&single&&t be luckier for having known you all.
