It is with great sadness we announce the sudden loss of Graeme Charles Craig on Feb 8, 2021 in his 74th year. Survived by his loving wife, Helen (Elliott) Craig of 49 years. Proud father of Michael Craig of RR 1 Walton, and Shannon Craig and Dave Soontiens of Mitchell. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Sherrill and Robert Christian of Oceanview, Delaware, Robert and Sharon Elliott of Kitchener, Emily and Scott LaRue of Haliburton, and Mary Elliott of Burnaby, B.C. Lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Harvey and Margaret (Stewart) Craig, infant son Chad, and in-laws Gordon and Sarah (Whitmore) Elliott.
Graeme was a life resident of his century farm in Walton. His first passion in life was music. At a young age, he and his sister, Sherrill took part in many singing competitions. Throughout his life, Graeme entertained many people singing and playing guitar at church, weddings and family celebrations. He was a graduate of Ridgetown College and started his first career as a technician for United Breeders in Wingham. In 1984 Graeme changed careers to become an Insurance Agent for McKillop Mutual Insurance Company in Seaforth. He loved the relationships he made with his clients, he always had a joke and a light hearted approach that was also genuine and sincere.
In true non-partisan fashion, Graeme was appointed the Federal Returning Officer for Huron-Bruce in 2003. He had many political friends from all parties. He ran as the Liberal candidate in 1978. He was also full of surprises. In 1997 he and Helen purchased the Walton Inn. They felt inclusiveness was important and Michael needed a place to work. It was a pleasure to serve the Walton community for over 22 years. Graeme had many extra-curricular interests throughout his life. He held many positions with the local and Ontario Plowing Matches. This included a term as President of Ontario Plowmen’s Association, Chair of IPM ’99 in Dashwood and current Treasurer of the Canadian Plowing Match. Graeme also enjoyed 12 years as Trustee and Chair on the Huron County Board of Education. He truly valued the friendships through all parts of his life. He made a positive impact on everyone he touched. Once you met him, you were a friend for life.
A private family funeral service will be held on Friday, February 12th at 11 AM with Rev. Ken Whiting officiating. Interment Brussels Cemetery. When Bonnie told me of Graham Craig’s death, i felt gut-punched. It’s not as if we had maintained contact after Bonnie & I left Walton for a new pastoral charge in Belwood, but as someone who will soon be 80 & as a historian who is now deep into writing my MEMOIRS, I remember so very fondly Graham’s welcoming me into the community. As soon as Bonnie told me the sorrowful news, tears pored down my cheek & I had a flood of warm memories which followed that first flood–our political “kibbitzing”–my NDP politics over against his faithful liberalism. Often times when someone dies there emerges all kinds of “good things” to he point of non-recognition. Well, the praise heaped on Graham matched the man I knew–his love & dedication to his village & church, his integrity in his insurance efforts, his supreme fairness in all his dealings. As well, i remember his charming & grinning sense of humor.
What endears me most to Graham was his unswerving support of Bonnie & me as a couple. Two incidents come immediately to mind: 1) after our first breakup & almost a year of bouncing around, I realized that I loved Bonnie & wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. So I motored back to Walton. Thankfully Bonnie was ready to take a second chance on the sustainability of our love. So we were quietly sitting on the manse’s porch swing holding hands, when Graham appeared. He immediately wheeled around & left us alone realizing that he did not want to intrude, but not before I noticed a welcoming smile on his face. 2). Bonnie’s announcement of our engagement at Walton’s Christmas Eve service was signaled by the outrageous engagement ring that my dad had given to my mom years after their engagement (when he could afford it). Then immediately upon her verbal announcement, the congregation rose as one with thunderous applause, led by Graham. In that moment I knew that I had been embraced by the community. I know, with all my heart, that our loss, will soon pass in God’s measure of time & Graham will be awaiting all of us in God’s eternal home with a thunderous welcoming applause much like the one that welcomed me into Walton’s loving arms.

He would make a point when you seen him on the street for a quick check in on how things were going. Inclusion meant alot to Graeme and we were so thankful for Graeme and Helen giving Jason the opportunity for a job when no one would. I remember he stopped in for a chat in my office and asked how Jason was doing. We chatted about about Jason wanting to find work and he said leave it with him, he might just have something. The next day he called so ask if Jason would like to do dishes at the Walton INN. We were forever grateful for this opportunity for Jason and the many great people in the community he met there and formed friendships with. Jason loved performing at the INN with Graeme sometimes too and played for them on their retirement. Great memories and great friends. We will miss him dearly.

Graeme and I spent many years singing together at church playing our guitars, It was so easy to harmonize with him. We had our little church band ( Graeme, Keith, Me, Patty, Jim, Marion, Marie, Glenda, Pearl & Phyllis ). Don, Marion, Graeme and I sang as a quartet in church. Our families worked together as Liberals with both Helen and Graeme and attended many of the same events. Worked together on the church board. Worked together in the church kitchen and suppers.
