BEDELL: Philip Reed of Lucan

Passed away peacefully at LHSC – Victoria Hospital on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at the age of 80. Beloved husband of Nadene (Dickins) Bedell for 57 years. Cherished father of Paul and Renae Bedell and Ty and Kelly Bedell. Fondly remembered by his good friends and colleagues, Jim Robinson and Gilles Aubertin. Predeceased by his parents Paul and Irma (Brown) Bedell.

Philip’s life was marked by remarkable achievements and a profound impact on both his profession and his family. He earned the honour of becoming an Ahmek Ranger and was known for his skill as a Dominion Marksman. Philip found great joy in swimming, and canoe tripping while exploring the natural beauty of Algonquin Park.

As a highly respected geotechnical engineer, Philip made significant contributions to heavy civil and mine waste projects worldwide. He was a dedicated mentor to countless engineers and a passionate advocate for advancing the engineering profession. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the work he loved.

A private family graveside service will be held at Woodland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the South Huron Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

I learned a tremendous amount from Phil. Phil had an infectious passion for engineering. He showed me what it meant to be a professional engineer and how to conduct one’s self in the consulting industry. He was a true artist and innovator when it came to geo-engineering. He was a consultant’s consultant. Even though our paths separated and we worked for separate firms, he never hesitated to provide thoughtful insight whenever called upon.
Phil had a unique sense of humour that will be missed and often re-called by those who knew him best.
To Nadene, Paul and Tye, please accept our sincerest condolences.

Condolence from Martin Ménard on October 8th, 2024 6:24 PM

Dear Bedell Family,

It is with great sorrow and sadness that I have learned about the passing away of my dear friend Phil.

I have worked directly with Phil for over 10 years on mining projects all around the world; Burkina Faso, Suriname, Greenland, Canada. Moreover, through a new engineering start-up firm I co-founded 2 years ago to service the mining industry, Synectiq Inc., Phil generously accepted to act as a technical advisor in overseeing the geotechnical and civil engineering practice within Synectiq along with his good and great friend Gil. Phil was a contemporary man; he adapted his practice to the dynamic changes of the industry. He was known amongst us for his excellence, his integrity and righteousness. His sense of details was profoundly remarkable; nothing could escape his attention to achieve completeness and exactitude. His sense of duty towards the engineering profession and its practice was unwavering.

We always joked with Phil (and Gil) that when he was probably thinking about retirement plans, we at Synectiq were probably learning how to ride a bicycle. Notwithstanding the generational gap of over 40 years we had with him, Phil engaged with us as a real professional; he spoke to us as equal with at his heart the best interest to share his phenomenal professional experience from which we have greatly benefitted, but also to pursue his dedication to the profession by providing us with a tremendous mentorship role.

I have been blessed in my professional life to have been exposed to phenomenal professionals and mentors. Phil was, simply put, a phenomenal professional and mentor, and will forever be grateful for his contribution to my career.

He will be dearly missed by the Synectiq Family, and will continue being revered as one of the best engineer there was, and for the great mentor he was in the emergence of Synectiq.

My sincerest condolences to the Family

Martin Ménard

Condolence from Chris Masterson on October 9th, 2024 10:21 AM

I was so sorry to hear about the loss of Phil. After graduating at Western with my soils degree in 1969, I started with Golder and met Phil. He was my mentor as I was a junior engineer with the firm. Near the end of my education, I asked Larry Soderman how I could get a job with Golder Associates. He as a professor at Western and partner in the Golder firm said, “Just come out to the Hyde Park office and start to work.” I did and worked with Phil day in and day out for 2.5 years. The firm moved me to Toronto and I wanted to go back home so quit and headed to Chatham. I never forgot Phil and used Golder and Phil almost exclusively to conduct soils for us. The London and Windsor offices were very helpful to Chatham. As a new engineer, I learned a lot from him both in soils engineering and professionalism – he was an inspiration, being a very good, dedicated and honest, upright, ethical and sincere professional. Nadene I am very sorry for your loss. I never new Phil’s offspring, but give my condolences to them as well for sure. Just sorry I haven’t kept in touch these last few years with retirement and all. I will always cherish the moments we shared, his insightful counsel, and the friendship we built over the years. The world has truly lost one of the best, and he will be greatly missed.

Condolence from David and Arlene Noonan on October 9th, 2024 6:22 PM

Dear Nadene, Paul and Tyler

We were saddened when we got the news that Phil had died. Our prayers are with you and your loved ones.

Our relationship with Phil and his family began over 50 years ago. I was transferred to Golder’s “Farm Club “ in London in 1974. We bought an old farmhouse near Lucan. Over the years, I spent many hours working with Phil, often with few words being spoken.

Phil’s reputation as an engineer is legendary, and he became a mentor to me – by this I mean he cared. He and Nadene became close friends, and it is that friendship that we think about today.

We spent family time together and eventually the Bedells bought their own farm near Lucan. Arlene and I remember weekends together doing renovations, gathering firewood, making apple cider, smelt fishing…Phil and Nadene sponsored our application to adopt children. Years later, the Bedell family visited our cottage. Phil brought his canoe and gave me a few lessons. Then he gave me his canoe. That’s the kind of man Phil was.

My last email with Phil shortly before he died was vintage Phil. He simply said “It’s been a struggle. Thanks for the note. Phil”

Rest in peace my friend.

David & Arlene

Condolence from Brad Weber on October 11th, 2024 8:30 AM

I first met Phil in the late 1990’s on a project in London. It didn’t take long for me to realize the positive impact he had on the engineering profession. His kind demeaner and expertise earned the respect shown to him by those working around him. For years, he was our go to guy. This summer, after several years removed from seeing him, I reconnected with Phil to seek similar geotechnical advice. As the true professional he’s always been, he provided guidance right up to immediately before he left us, last weekend. He’s remembered fondly by many; a legend, really. My condolences to his family and friends.
Brad
