BAYNHAM: Barry of Exeter
Posted By Haskett Funeral Homes On August 24, 2023 @ 12:01 PM In Exeter,Obituary | 152 Comments
Suddenly at his residence on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 of Exeter at the age of 72. Lovingly devoted father of Shonyn Coward, Brenyn and Bill Hodge, Jaclyn and Craig Shaw, Lauryn and Chris Marion, and loving and caring friend Ann Baynham. Extremely proud papa of Alix, Nate, and Will; Drew and Lexi; Kane and Sloan; and Brooklyn and Blake. Brother of Bryan Baynham and dear cousin of Janis and Tom Pratt. Predeceased by his parents Gordon and Maida (Wein) Baynham, and John and Angela Morrissey.
Barry lived each day to the fullest. He always had a story. He always had a smile. He always had a smart ass joke. On and off the ice he lived life with passion, determination and love. But his biggest pride and joy was watching his children and grandchildren playing with the same enthusiastic spirit that he had.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Barry’s life will be held at the Haskett Funeral Home, 456 Main Street South, EXETER on Sunday, August 27th from 2-5 PM with words of remembrance starting at 3 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Jessica’s House, or South Huron Minor Hockey – specifically to support those needing assistance with registration costs would be appreciated by the family.
I am lost to learn of Barry’s passing. It was indeed sudden. I spent many many years with Bart as trainer for the Exeter Mohawks and then with he Exeter Hawks when Barry and Dave Revington coached them. We rode many miles on team buses over the years with tight knit teams and those friendships that still endure. We used to meet up with Bart in Florida on several occasions. Always a fun chat when I met Bart. I know he was proud of the sports accomplishments of his family. He will be deeply missed . My sincere condolences to all of Bart’s family.
To the Baynham family please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of Barry, it was quite a shock to hear of his passing, I played hockey against him for years a game he played very well. Our thoughts are with the entire family at this difficult time.

Remembering my friend … A kind, generous, honest man who adored his family and was always ready to help his friends. We spoke often and his zest for life and adventures was contagious. He was happy to spend time in BC recently. He will be missed by many in Florida too. His absence will be evident this winter. (Rest in peace, Bart.)
To his precious family…I hope that the wonderful memories you created with him will sustain you at this sad time.

I am so very saddened to hear of Barry’s passing. He was such a cheerful human and fun boss. I can’t even picture him NOT smiling. And he did have great stories.
I share these stories in honour of Bart because he was so much fun and such a great story teller… and story maker:
When I worked at the Beer Store in the early 90s, we were selling beer hockey jerseys with a bonus puck for $29.99. I was working the till, Bart was throwing in the back and the mic was on so he could hear everything. This guy came in and wanted to just buy the puck. He kept demanding that he just wanted to buy the puck. The guy really wouldn’t stop. Finally, I told him he could by the puck. “How much?”, he said. “$29.99 and you get a bonus hockey jersey”, I said. There was dead silence in the front, but Bart’s laughter carried through the entire store. We laughed about it the rest of the night. And we laughed about it again over a beer when our shift was over.
And anytime I was throwing in the back and a male customer asked for a carry out, Bart loved calling “Soldan, carry out” and I (5ft2 20 YO at the time) would waltz out front and carry the cases. There was never a dull shift when the boss was working.
These were just moments with Barry as great boss. I can’t imagine the loss you are all feeling as his life-friend, daughter, son-in-law and/or grandchild. How lucky you all were to have had him in your life as father, father-in-law, grandfather and significant friend.
My deepest condolences and hugs to all,
Sue Beckett
Chris, Lauryn, Brooklyn and Blake

So sorry to hear about the sudden loss of your Dad. Thinking of you all, and sending you strength to get through these hard days.
Incredibly saddened to hear of this loss. I was fortunate enough to be on the 2004-2005 Exeter Hawks with Barry behind the bench and will be forever grateful for his guidance and uncanny ability to “keep things light” in any pressure situation. Bart will be missed by so many and we want to express our deepest sympathies to all family and friends.

I remember playing hockey, mostly against Bart, but was lucky to play with him one year the
LI Jets. It was more enjoyable playing with him than against him.
We hadn’t talked for a few years but met him last summer. Was nice to talk about old times and how the Leaf’s were going to do this year/last year.
We will both miss Barry. He was a good friend for almost 60 years. From school, to sports, to family friends with young kids, to proud grandparents, we shared many fun times and made great memories.
Bart was a tough competitor, a guy you wanted on your team but hated to play against, he left an impression!
We will miss his humour and wit and remember him as a great friend!

To the entire Baynham family, please accept my sincere condolences on your profound loss. Barry (Bart) was certainly a “one-of-a-kind” special man whom I was honoured to have played senior hockey with for a few years. And family.
My deepest sympathies to Barry’s family. We grew up together at the north end and I can still picture the scrub ball games we played! He always had a smile and story. Keep your memories close.
Barry’s passing is so very, very sad for me. To Bryan, Barry’s family and all those closest to him, I hope the precious memories I know you have will make these awful days a little bit easier, and that the memories will never, ever dim.
‘Way back when, Barry and I had thought of ourselves as “blood brothers”, after we’d pricked the tips of our fingers and then pressed them together.
We couldn’t have been more than 12 or so …
We were defence partners right up to our days as Jr Hawks … which included the occasional need for police protection at game’s end — most memorably in Lucan — since visitors’ arenas didn’t seem to appreciate Barry’s turtling – or his habit of deking goalies twice on a breakaway … the second time for torment and entertainment.
Barry was simply so much better than the rest of us – a fact he enjoyed immensely. And he was generous: He knew that I knew that my getting the puck on his stick as quickly and as often as possible would be seen as my having played a “great game”.
God he was good – and not only at hockey.
The first time I saw anyone going backwards over a high-jump bar, Barry was doing it – and well before anyone else. He threw the first curve ball I ever tried to hit. He taught me how to bunt. And I taught him how to avoid the temptation — hilarious to him — of putting his fastball up around my chin.
He was much more than a unique athletic talent, of course. He always seemed so damn happy with who he was, and happier still spending time telling and listening to stories. Time with Barry usually meant time spent smirking, smiling and laughing – it’s how he shared himself and his happiness, and how very, very lucky for the rest of us.
I’ve kept my memories this long. I know I’ll keep them forever.
Barry Baynham was the most remarkable hockey player I ever saw.
Not only was Barry a very talented hockey player who excelled at high levels of both Junior and Senior hockey, he also possessed an incredible ability to greatly irritate players on opposing teams and then to emerge from the ensuing hostilities he had provoked unscathed and with a big grin on his face.
I remember a game when he was playing for the Guelph CMCs he managed to provoke future NHLers Mark and Marty Howe into taking retaliatory penalties (on the same shift!), and then to wave bye bye to them as they were led to the penalty box.
I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed the privilege of watching him play.
Our sincere condolences to all . Bart was a true beauty and the life of a party. He will be missed.
Shelley and I offer our deepest condolences to Barry’s family. It is such a shock to suddenly lose someone who has been a great friend for more than half a century. It was a special honour for me to be part of Barry and Ann’s wedding party so many years ago. Over the years we had many, many great times as hockey and baseball teammates as well as experiencing many eventful and memorable excursions. Bart was truly a unique guy – a great athlete with a wonderful sense of humour and a special approach to life. Rest in peace my old friend – you will always be in my memories.
Terry Bourne

Our condolences to Anne and family.
I was very sorry to hear of Barry’s passing. What a wonderful guy. It takes a special person to mean so much to so many.
I never played hockey for Bart but we became close. He supported me after my fathers death, made an effort to check on me. I think he often reached out to those of us who lost our parents young. It was never much of a spoken thing but I knew he was there for me.
Take pride in your Dad’s legacy. Laugh and smile at the memories. Feel all the love he so certainly deserved.
Lots of love for you all.
My sympathies go out to all the family. Through the years so ever apparent how proud he was of his girls’. Barry had a smile that light up a room and always a story to go with it. Thinking of you all.
Myla Lovell
Barry brightened our lives. It was always happy times when he was around.
We will miss him terribly.
Love and hugs to all of you.
Janis and Tom
Barry was a loyal son who never went more than a couple of days without popping into see his mom, Maida, next door to us. We would see his hockey sweaters hung out to dry in her backyard for many years. He brought lots of joy to her life with his “sunny” smile. I think she could always forgive a little “mischief” when he gave her those four beautiful daughters (and grandkids) to love. Our deepest condolences for your loss.
My deepest condolences to Brenyn, Ann and the rest of the family.
Barry was a huge supporter of Brenyn’s outstanding University of Toronto field hockey journey as was Ann.
They attended games and championships, cheered on Brenyn and the team and had us all over for dinner when we came to London to play at Western.
Thinking of you all at this difficult time…
Beth

So sorry to hear of Barry’s sudden passing. I’m sure he’ll be greatly missed by many! He will always be remembered as a wonderful manager to me at the Beer Store and hockey coach. May Barry always be remembered with many great stories and memories.

When we moved to Exeter in 1981, we were lucky to have Barry and Ann and their young family as our next door neighbours. They welcomed us to the community and made a difficult transition easier.
Barry was always the life of the party and an excellent athlete who was a big asset to every hockey and ball team who were lucky enough to have him give his time to play for them.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Barry’s family. We always enjoyed his quick wit, stories and jokes, many of which were shared over a backyard cocktail. May your happy memories warm your hearts and help you through the difficult days ahead.

My deepest sympathies to Ann, Bryan, and family. I only learned this afternoon (day of the service) of Barry’s passing. I first met Barry the first year we played Bantham hockey together. Red Loader was the coach and Gord Baynham was the GM. What a team that was and what a year we had! As Ron mentioned, we were all in the same grade 9 homeroom together (Barry, Ron, Jack, Charlie, Cam, Barry S. and many other characters). Barry and I went on to play junior hockey together as well as Panther football at South Huron. So many happy memories and so many years ago. xXx

To all Barry’s family and friends, my sincere sympathy. Barry truly was a character. Always a smile and a joke. He was fun to watch on the ice too!
Remember the good times.
Shonyn, Brenyn, Jaclyn, Lauryn, Ann, Bryan and all of your families.
Please accept our sincere condolences and so sorry he left so soon.
He will always be remembered as Barry (Misty, Bart, or Mr Barry Baynham) as he was a neighbour, a coworker, a copilot, a roommate, a wingman, and a Best Man and will always be a friend.
Check you later Bart!
Mitch
Barry will be missed at Ironwood, there was always a smart comment and a smile when he entered the clubhouse. He loved his golf and the round table after the game!
We are thinking of all of you at this sad time.
Anne, Shonyn, Brenyn, Jaclyn & Lauryn.
Our sincere condolences to everyone. Was saddened to hear of “Bart’s” sudden passing. He will be missed by everyone in this area. Always had a smile on his face and smart remark to go with it!! Always made me laugh at something (or at myself).

I hadn’t had the privilege of visiting with Bart for many years until the recent Exeter Quincentennial. He spoke of his kids and grandkids with such pride and enthusiasm..
