It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved son and brother. Andrew died Sunday, May 27 2012 in his 29th year, a victim of a car accident where alcohol was involved. Cherished son of Terry (Playford/Burridge)  and John Herbert of Granton, and best  friend to his sister, Elizabeth. Dear grandson of Harry and Betty Herbert of London. Will be missed by his aunts, uncles, and many cousins. Predeceased by his grandparents Lois Herbert, Happy Burridge, and Ted Burridge.

Friends may call at the Haskett Funeral Home, 223 Main Street, Lucan on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9PM  and for one hour prior to the funeral  service, which will be held on Thursday, May 31st at 1:30 PM with Pastor Paul Vollick officiating. Interment St. James Cemetery, Clandeboye.

Donations to mindyourmind.ca (cheques to: Family Service Thames Valley) or the Granton-Wesley United Church would be appreciated by the family.

When you take away self-division
And eliminate self-friction
You limit personal restriction
And gain clarity of vision

So now that my mind is as one
My days of not knowing myself are over and done
My path lies ahead of me clear as the rising sun
And the victory of accomplishment is soon to be won

I don’t know if you are still reading these, but I just heard Andrew’s name when they were talking about it on the news today. I worked with Andrew through WOTCH and I was amazed at what a wonderful, gentle man he was and how far he had come. I no longer worked with him only because he did not require support from us any longer. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

    To the Family of Andrew,
I only just read about the tragic passing of your son and although I did not know him, I was extremely moved by his words and work. He must have been an exceptional young man and his sudden death will be deeply felt by his community. My sympathies are with you at this very sad time.

    Dear Herbert family,

I am so deeply sorry for the loss of your beautiful son and brother. He really was such a wonderful and amazing person.

I had the privilege of knowing Andrew while he volunteered and contributed and visited us at mindyourmind. It was very nice to read his poem “Feeling Different”. You really do see such a transformation in him through this piece of writing. I am so happy to see he found beauty and light before he had to go and I am so happy to have known him.

I wish you all peace, love and joy in remembering Andrew.

From one parent to another…no parent should have to bury their child, its not the way the world is supposed to go. It is with the saddest of hearts that I write on this wall…I thought very highly of your son, I loved to see him at my house…he was always so sweet and polite and he was amazing with my granddaughter. I have to beleive that out of tragedy….lessons are learned and our love for one another grows stronger…I think of Drew alot and keep seeing that wonderful smile and truly do beleive he is now an angel watching over those he loved and helping us all through this painful time…please accept my prayers and thoughts….

    Andrew,
It feels like not too long ago were we gathered around the table in the mindyourmind office joking around and laughing. I remember you letting me call you Andy despite the fact you preferred Andrew. I will forever miss your smile, brilliance and most of all, our occasional run-ins. You brought nothing less than joy and kindness with your presence. My heart goes out to your family and friends.
    I will miss you Andy.

I did not get the chance to get to know him more outside of work however I would have loved to. He was a very genuine guy and you could tell that through the meaningful thanks and smile he’d give you after a ride home or helping him out with something. May 28, 2012 at 7:17 PM

It was with great sadness that we heard of Andrew’s death today. Andrew began working with us in 2007 and helped shape our program, mindyourmind. He helped develop tools and mental health promotion resources that to this day are used by youth who struggle with mental health concerns and the professionals who support them. He often contributed to our online blog, or interviewed advocates and musicians for our site or periodically would drop in and offer his support wherever needed. We always accepted his offer.
If you knew Andrew then you knew that he was always the smartest person in the room…he was quiet and still but when he spoke it was always worth listening and when he wrote it was always worth taking the time to read and reflect on his words. Upfront and between the lines you understood that Andrew understood the human experience, our struggles and our capacity to be resilient despite all. He was hopeful and generous and we thank him for making a difference.

“…There are wars and those who actively incite or oppose them, but the only thing that changes or brings change is love and destruction. It takes a great deal of hope and faith in humanity to believe in the possibility of the love revolution. This is perhaps why we again and again embrace destruction: it is easy. It is far easier to embrace hate and self-hate, hopelessness and faithlessness, than to believe we can spread love, trust, hope and faith. The love revolution requires one thing: the mentality that “I can make a difference. I can show someone care and hope that seed will grow.” Destruction, requires nothing, you need not even commit to choosing to embrace it. But, if you should choose to consciously and actively not embrace destruction, than the love revolution can begin.”
